Piercing place is up front and you have to go thru the alley entrance for tattoos. Follow the cool mural around the corner, space is limited so no more than a few ppl inside at a time. My experience: literally last weekend-The shop was booked, we were trying to get two bookings for a small tat (traveled from TX and only in town for that weekend-had to leave bc covid restrictions were about to start) so we asked to be squeezed in if any cancelations came up-even if it was just one of us. Pics are from the day of and 1wk later-no peeling, feels great! ALSO–the waves took my nose ring so I actually got help from both store fronts. You do need to have an appointment and I was thankful to be squeezed in on both storefronts inbetween clients. I purchased a titanium opal nose ring with a flat anc…

This place is a really good spot to come to, I’ll for sure get more work done when I come back to the island. I did a walk in and I recommend you email them before the open to be able to get good info on whats going on for the day. I got work done by Brian and I’m really happy with what I got done. He ended up doing a custom peace and it came out better than what I came in with. And he made my experience there every welcoming. I recommend this spot if you out in Waikiki. Again thanks for everything.

4. Sua Suluape Toetu’u Aisea, Joel Albanez and Lucky Olelo- Soul Signature Tattoo and Art Studio

Sun Suluape Toetu’u Aisea established Soul Signature Tattoo along with Joel Albanez and Lucky Olelo in 2005. In the 1990s he was a member of the generation that started the “New Tribal” epoch, which is the organization of modern Polynesian tattoo. We combined different art forms such as Asian, illustration, and graffiti with different tribular designs from the Pacific Islands.

Soul Signature Tattoo

“Style” is a challenging concept for him to nail down since it is his enthusiasm to keep exploring and pushing the edges. Every tattoo is an opportunity for him to find new techniques to work with the client’s response, and in that respect, every person who wears his art is also wearing an interpretation of his artistic journey at that appropriate point in time. he was born and grown in Hawaii in Tongan immigrant inhabitants, and He has a Hawaiian/Filipino from his mother’s side. his brother and he started working as landscapers from a very immature age. Tongans are very enterprising and we learned how to take care of ourselves and take our chances, which is something a lot of the younger generations seem to be abstaining out from these days.

At around 14 years old he commenced using homemade tattoo machines to tattoo band members.  Exploring for designs led him to the library where he discovered lithographs of the original Tongan Tatau which entirely changed his life, which is the subject of a documentary he is operating on. In his early 20s, He met Tahitian tattooist Fredrick “Pooino” Yorandi and anthropologist Tricia Allen who were both Polynesian tattooists. With the help and direction of Tricia Allen, he attended his first tattoo conference in Toronto Canada in 1997 and never looked behind.

Soul Signature Tattoo

He started tattooing as a hobby which became a full-time career and then morphed into a quest to help people reconnect to their cultural heritage using artistic representation. One of the most encouraging things about tattooing was traveling and meeting people from so many distinct cultures and walks of life. These people urge him daily so that he can keep thrusting forward with his art.

Joel Albanez has been tattooing since 1999. With the artistic vision of Joel Albanez and the expertise and guidance of Suluape Aisea Toetu’u, collectively the three of them lighted Soul Signature, in late 2004. He specializes in Contemporary Asian tattooing. Through graffiti, he was able to connect with many talented and productive young people. One of them was Orly Loquiao (owner and founder of Humble Beginnings tattoo). He acquainted him with the world of tattooing. From there He met Suluape Aisea, Po’oino Yrondi, and Mike Ledger. Together we worked at New tribal Polynesian Tattoo in Waikiki, where he served his apprenticeship. All perspectives of tattooing interest me. Everything is a method. You can never know everything. Like any art form, you are invariably learning and continuously being overcome.

808 Tattoo was endowed in Hawaii in 2004 by Billy Whitney.  Over the years 808 Tattoo has grown to be one of Hawaii’s most honored custom tattoo parlors.  Clients drive from near and far to work with their artists. Each of their talented artists has an unusual style that provides their customers with an arrangement of tattoo choices. They take pride in their work and you can believe that their artists will work with you until you are content with your custom artwork.

808 Tattoo

Come in for a free consultation, walk-ins are appreciated. Billy Whitney was born in Okinawa Japan, where he lived until he was 15 years old. His father moved him to Hawaii where he graduated from Mililani High. After living his whole grown-up life here he can’t imagine living anywhere else but the islands.

808 Tattoo

He did his first tattoo in 1998. He pretty much sucked it until a guy named Jesse Perrin sat him down and showed him all the ins and outs of tattooing. He instructed him how to make needles, how to properly tune a machine, and most of the basics of tattooing that allowed him to grow into the craftsman he is today.

Late into the year 2000, he commenced working for a guy named Shane Harvey at a shop called Gunpoint. Shane equipped him with a great environment to work in and gave him the freedom to further refine his style. After a couple of years, he apprehended he wanted to be a custom tattoo artist, and as much as he relished working with everyone at Gunpoint (well everyone but one); the street shop atmosphere just wasn’t challenging adequate for him anymore.

808 Tattoo

After leaving Gunpoint he spent a while in Japan and operated at Coko’s Tattoo where Mako, Ken, and Hiro took him in as a son, and for that, he will always be thankful. They also shared with him their knowledge and expertise in concerns about Asian art and tattoos. He learned more than he could’ve ever dreamed! After returning from Japan, Brian Takishita (from Gunpoint) and himself decided to open up 808 Tattoo. We are attempting to make this shop a comfortable custom tattoo parlor for earnest collectors, as well as for those who see tattoos as true artwork.

Just to set the record continuous, for some reason some people demanded to have taught him how to tattoo, but if they are not specified in this little bio then they are full of shit. He guesses he should be complimented that someone else’s claim to fame is teaching him how to tattoo.

10. Lance McLain- Dragon Tattoo

Specializing in the classic American style, he frequently consolidates bold colors and strong, dark lines. Former clients have often appreciated the friendly service, cleanliness, and down-to-earth strategy.

Dragon Tattoo

Lance McLain (b. 1952), who holds and operates Dragon Tattoo in Wahiawa, is one of the few surviving tattoo artists from the Sailor Jerry lineage and he is still working full-time in the “Old School” or classic American fashion. McLain grew up in Burbank, California, where his mother served in an office for Universal Studios. His friends’ parents were Hollywood animators, set builders, electricians, and lighting technicians. “I was brought up in front of a TV set,” declares McLain. “They didn’t know it was detrimental for kids back then. I was being programmed early with images of movies going through my head, so that is reflected in my work.” After high school, he sought the Navy, ending up stationed in San Diego in 1972, where he met tattoo artists Don Ed Hardy, Mike Malone, and Zeke Owen and decided that he had finally found his mission. Hardy and Owens showed him Sailor Jerry’s flash, and McLain pledged himself he would one day meet him. In 1973, when his ship was tentatively docked in Honolulu, McLain took a bus to Chinatown and spent three days talking with Sailor Jerry about tattooing.

Dragon Tattoo

Less than a year following, after Sailor Jerry died, his widow sold China Sea Tattoo to Mike Malone, who hired McLain to be his trainee. Malone showed him the fundamentals, as well as the finer features of tattooing, and partook Sailor Jerry’s trade secrets with him. McLain worked for Malone from 1976 to 1980, until Malone sold him his Waikiki shop, Floating World.

Dragon Tattoo

The profiles of McLain’s pinup girls are softer and more vulnerable than Sailor Jerry’s. His work is deceptively manageable and is distinguished by strong, dark lines, bold, brilliant colors, and thick shapes. He avoids fussy shading, distinctions, and tones. “There’s a rule in tattooing that if someone can’t perceive what they’re looking at in seven seconds, your tattoo has not been successful, “ asserts McLain. “It has to be immediate, and it has to be absorbed instantaneously.”
