Penis Piercing Types That You Must Know

The vast majority of piercings are unisex in nature. These include eyebrow, lip, and nose piercings, as well as ear and nipple piercings. Nevertheless, men have quite different options when it comes to genital piercings from women. In case you’re interested in getting a genital piercing or just want to learn more about your options, you can choose from 15 different male genital piercings.

In addition to glans piercings, you can choose from penile shaft piercings, pubic piercings, scrotum piercings, perineum piercings, and even anal piercings. Are there any piercings that fall into each of those categories? How painful is it to get some piercings compared to others? Does one type of piercing stimulate the sexual organs more than another? Here’s the answer!

Types of Penis Piercings

Based on where they are situated in the male genital region, the 15 types of male genital piercings are divided into different categories. Check out the information below to learn which male genital piercings fall into which categories, their benefits and drawbacks, and what type of jewelry works best with which piercings.

PENIS HEAD PIERCINGS

Glans penis, or simply glans, is the head of the penis. In addition to the three glans piercing options available to all men, there is also a fourth option for uncircumcised men:

Dydoe Piercings

A dydoe piercing goes through the top of the glans, parallel to the shaft of the penile. After the dydoe piercing has been placed, the front ball of the short straight barbell placed for this piercing sits centered atop the glans, and the back ball rests against the top of the penile shaft. You can get one or several dydoe piercings if the circumference of your glans will support more than a pair of dydoe piercings. Dydoe piercings are typically done in pairs with a little space between them.

Benefits of Dydoe Piercings:

  • The dydoe piercing is one of the less painful male genital piercings.
  • The position of the balls makes them sexually stimulating for partners- particularly for female partners during intercourse when the balls are placed in contact with the woman’s G-spot.
  • Dydoe piercings are regarded by most people as attractive-looking piercings that enhance the appearance of the glans.

Piercings of the Dydoe are not without drawbacks:

  • Dydoe piercings are technically surface piercings, which makes them more likely to migrate and reject than piercings that go straight through the penis, such as apadravya piercings. If you place them as deeply as possible (so the barbell rests flush against the penile shaft on the backside) and use heavier-gauge jewelry, you won’t have to worry about migration or rejection as much.
  • This may not be the genital piercing for you if you like wearing a variety of different types of jewelry in your piercings. A short straight barbell is the only type of jewelry that can be worn in dydoe piercings.
  • The wearer of genital piercings doesn’t experience any physical sexual enhancement. However, dydoe piercings can be mentally stimulating, especially if they are a turn-on for your partner and they enjoy the sensation of them during a sexual encounter.
  • Dydoe piercings require 2 to 3 months to heal, and you are not allowed to have intercourse, engage in self-stimulation, play with your jewelry, or come in contact with others’ bodily fluids during that time

Ampallang Piercings

Ampallang piercings go through the glans horizontally, so the barbell balls sit on the left and right sides of the head of the penis after this piercing is installed.

Benefits of Ampallang Piercings:

  • Ampallang piercings are considered by many men as an aesthetic enhancement to the glans.
  • Depending on the position of the piercing, a partner can be sexually stimulated by this piercing. Additionally, it can be a mental turn-on for the wearer, particularly when it stimulates a partner sexually.

Drawbacks of Ampallang Piercings:

  • The ampallang piercing is one of the most painful male genital piercings. You may want to ask your piercer to apply a topical anesthetic like Derma Numb 20-30 minutes before piercing you to take the edge off the pain.
  • There is a limited selection of jewelry available for these piercings. In most cases, they are done with a straight barbell and balls at the ends, but you can substitute half balls for regular balls. It’s also possible to wear a D-ring in this piercing once it’s fully healed, but most men stick to straight barbells.
  • A piercing such as this can be uncomfortable for partners during intercourse, especially when having sex with a woman in common positions such as the missionary and doggy style. In those positions, the barbell balls would rub along the sidewalls of the vagina, potentially causing discomfort and even tears of the delicate tissue. Sexual positions sideways could put one of the balls in contact with a woman’s G-spot, however. In any sexual position, wearing half balls on your ampallang barbell can make sex more comfortable for both male and female partners.
  • The Ampallang piercing heals more slowly than almost any other male genital piercing. Your sexual function will be impaired for at least four to six months

Apadravya Piercings

Apadravya piercings go straight through the glans vertically, with one barbell ball centered atop the glans and the opposing ball centered below the glans.

Benefits of Apadravya Piercings:

  • In common sexual positions like missionary and doggy style, apadravya piercings can be extremely sexually stimulating for female partners. This is due to the barbell balls rubbing against a woman’s G-spot.
  • The way this piercing stimulates a partner during intercourse makes it an attractive enhancement to the glans for many men.

Drawbacks of Apadravya Piercings:

  • The apadravya piercing is among the most painful male genital piercings as well as the ampallang piercing. Although topical anesthetic can help with this, you should still get an apadravya piercing before this.
  • The jewelry options for apadravya piercings are limited, too. There is only one good option for this piercing: straight barbells. But you can choose between regular balls or half balls.
  • Padadravya piercings take 4-6+ months to heal, and during this time you cannot have sex of any kind. It means no oral sex, self-stimulation, or intercourse for at least four months and quite possibly longer.

Kuno Piercings

Circumcised men cannot have Kuno piercings since the skin of the foreskin is pierced. Various points of the foreskin’s top rim can be used as percutaneous placement points.

Benefits of Kuno Piercings:

  • Uncircumcised men find kuno piercings to be an aesthetically pleasing enhancement to their glans.
  • When an uncircumcised man is aroused, the kuno piercing sits below the glans and may titillate partners during intercourse in a similar way to a frenum piercing.
  • Kuno piercings usually heal within eight weeks. However, it can take as little as six weeks for some people and as long as 12 weeks for others to fully heal.

Drawbacks of Kuno Piercings:

  • Kuno piercings can only be acquired by uncircumcised men.
  • Unlike some other male genital piercings, frontal piercings are surface piercings, so they’re more prone to migration and rejection. By wearing a heavier-gauge ring and getting pierced at least 1/4″ or more below the edge of the foreskin rim, you can avoid these problems.
  • The only jewelry options for Kuno piercings are rings, although there can be a lot of choice within the broad category of rings. In addition to captive bead and segment rings, seamless rings are available in a wide variety of styles.

PENILE SHAFT PIERCINGS

Penile shaft piercings can be classified into seven different types. Three types of piercings fall into this category: frenum piercing, Prince Albert piercing, and dolphin piercing.

Frenum Piercings

The frenum is traditionally pierced horizontally along the underside of the penile shaft. In this case, they are known as dorsal frenum piercings because they are placed along the top of the shaft. When men first get a frenum piercing, they often choose to have it placed close to the head of the penis, which allows them to choose between straight barbells and D-rings. Circular barbells or captive rings may also be worn in your frenum piercing, but the other two styles tend to be more comfortable and stimulating for partners during intercourse.

A Jacob’s ladder is an arrangement in which you have several frenum piercings in a row with equal spacing between them along the top or bottom of your penile shaft. Men sometimes build up Jacob’s ladder slowly over time, if they like the look of the first one so much that they want more, or if their partners seem to enjoy the feel of their frenum piercings during sex and think they’d enjoy additional frenum piercings even more. Alternatively, you can have several frenum piercings done at the same time if you want to minimize the amount of time you’re out of commission while your piercings heal.

There is a fourth type of frenum piercing, a low frenum called a lorum. The Lorum piercings are located at the base of the penile shaft, where the scrotum meets the shaft. It’s more like Lorum piercings are cousins to frenum piercings than any other piercing, although they’re similar to frenum piercings more than any other piercing. A Jacob’s ladder may be built onto their undersides as a means of accessing the penile shaft. Although a straight barbell can be worn in a lorum piercing, most men choose circular barbells or captive rings.

Benefits of Frenum Piercings:

  • The Frenum piercing can be very sexually stimulating for partners of either sex during intercourse. Adding frenum piercings gives the penis a ribbed feeling that is amplified by each piercing.
  • If you decide to get a frenum piercing, you have many options for placement. The piercings can be placed anywhere along the penile shaft – even on the sides, although that position is less common than traditional frenum or dorsal frenum piercings.
  • If you get your frenum pierced near the top of the penile shaft, just below the glans, you can wear a D-ring in it and loop it over the head of your penis so that the ring completely encloses the head of your penis. D-rings act like cock rings in this circumstance – they trap blood in the head of the penis and keep it engorged.
  • While straight barbells are the most common type of jewelry worn in frenum piercings, you have more options with this type of piercing than with most other male genital piercings. For your frenum piercing, you can wear circular barbells, captive rings (including seamless rings, segment rings, D-rings, and traditional captive bead rings), straight barbells, or even bent barbells.

Drawbacks to Frenum Piercings:

  • Compared to piercings like ampallangs and apadravyas that penetrate straight through the penis, Frenum piercings are surface piercings, which means they are more likely to migrate and reject. If your piercer places your frenum piercings as deeply below the skin as possible, and if you wear heavier-gauge jewelry, you will minimize the chances of rejection.
  • While most partners find frenum piercings to be sexually stimulating, they may not be right for everyone. Start with one and make sure your partner likes the way it feels during intercourse before getting more frenum piercings.
  • Jacob’s ladders, dorsal frenum piercings, and traditional frenum piercings take between 4 and 6 months to heal, during which time you must avoid all forms of sex. (That means no stimulation for yourself either!) The exception to this is Lorum piercings which take between two and three months to heal.

Prince Albert Piercings

While Prince Albert’s piercings look like glans piercings, the only part of the penis that is actually pierced is the shaft. Prince Albert piercings are typically performed beneath the head of the penis on the underside of the shaft. The needle has to puncture the urethra, which can be difficult and sometimes requires a needle pusher for leverage. In most cases, after the urethra has been pierced, the piercer will thread a bent barbell up the urethra and out through the urethral opening in the tip of the glans.

A bent barbell is ideal starter jewelry for Prince Albert piercings because of the curved path where this piercing is located, however, you can wear other styles of jewelry as well. If you’d rather wear a barbell, captive ring, or PA wand, wait until the piercing is fully healed before adding those jewelry pieces.

Reverse Prince Albert piercings, where the urethra is punctured from the top of the shaft instead of the bottom, are popular among some men. The position can be more stimulating for female partners during intercourse in common positions like missionary, whereas a traditional PA piercing is more likely to hit her G-spot in positions like doggy style.

Benefits of Prince Albert Piercings:

  • In addition to PA piercings, reverse PA piercings can also be very sexually stimulating for partners during intercourse.
  • For PA piercings, a variety of jewelry options are available. If you have a PA or reverse PA piercing, you may wear a bent barbell, a circular barbell, any type of captive ring, or a Prince Albert ring.
  • PA piercings heal more quickly than many other male genital piercings, usually in as little as four to six weeks.

Drawbacks of PA Piercings:

  • PA piercings tend to be either loved or hated by partners. In case your partner can’t handle intercourse when wearing PA jewelry, you can try wearing a condom to ease them into it, or see if a PA wand is more comfortable for your partner during intercourse, or remove your jewelry when having sex.
  • Getting your urethra pierced can be excruciatingly painful, but it’s only a momentary, fleeting pain, and you can minimize the pain by having a topical anesthetic applied before getting your urethra pierced.
  • While wearing PA jewelry, it can be difficult to urinate. It may take some time for men to learn how to manage the flow better after getting pierced until they can do so sitting down

Dolphin Piercings

Penile shaft piercings are classified into 7 types, including dolphin piercings. You need a well-healed traditional PA piercing to get one since dolphin piercings are performed on the underside of the penile shaft and connect to a hole in a PA piercing.  When you get a dolphin piercing, your piercer will puncture your urethra in a second-place that is around 5/8″ below your PA piercing hole.  Afterward, he/she will thread a bent barbell through your urethra and out of your PA piercing hole. You can ask your piercer to replace your bent barbell with a longer bent barbell that stretches far enough to pass through your urethral opening instead of your PA hole if wearing a bent barbell in your dolphin piercing is uncomfortable during the healing process. The longer bent barbell will have a gentler curve, and it will put less pressure on your healing piercing.

Benefits of Dolphin Piercings:

  • During sexual intercourse, dolphin piercings can be extremely stimulating for partners of either sex.
  • Most people find dolphin piercings to be a more fun alternative to PA piercings, particularly if they dislike PA piercings. If you get one, you can maintain your PA piercing hole while keeping your current partner happy sexually. There are even PA wands with two posts that can be worn in dolphin piercings (like the one shown to the right) that you may enjoy wearing more than your original PA jewelry.
  • It usually takes just 4 to 8 weeks for dolphin piercings to heal. It takes a little more time for a dolphin piercing to heal than a traditional PA piercing due to the fact that the tissue further down the penile shaft tends to be thicker than it is where traditional PA piercings are placed. Occasionally, they’ll heal in the same amount of time, however.

Drawbacks of Dolphin Piercings:

  • Getting a dolphin piercing is only possible if you have a traditional PA piercing that is well healed.
  • The healing time of PA piercings is usually about two weeks longer than that of PA piercings.
  • A dolphin piercing restricts you from wearing a bent barbell. The jewelry styles that work better in these piercings do not typically work in other styles.

PUBIC PIERCINGS

The pubic piercing can be placed almost anywhere on the pubic area. They’re more aesthetically pleasing than sexually stimulating piercings, and they’re a great alternative for men who want a genital piercing that doesn’t penetrate the penis.

Benefits of Pubic Piercings:

  • If you want to get a pubic piercing, you aren’t confined to one spot; they can be placed anywhere on the pubic mound.
  • If desired, you can get one pubic piercing or several.
  • Jewelry options for pubic piercings range from captive rings of all kinds to circular barbells, to micro straight barbells, to bent barbells.
  • Pubic piercing is considered by many men to be an attractive enhancement to their genital region.

Drawbacks of Pubic Piercings:

  • Pubic piercings are surface piercings, which means they’re more likely to migrate and reject than some other male genital piercings. You will be more likely to avoid these problems if your piercings are deep and you wear heavy-gauge jewelry, as well as wearing loose-fitting underwear and pants while you heal.
  • For partners of men with pubic piercings, there is no physical sexual benefit.
  • It takes 2-3 months for them to heal, but as long as you’re careful, you don’t have to wait until they’re fully recovered to resume sexual activity.

SCROTAL PIERCINGS

Hafada piercings, also known as scrotal piercings, are surface piercings that can be placed anywhere on the scrotum. The scrotal ladder can be created by obtaining one or several, or even in a row. Similar to pubic piercings, scrotal piercings have more of an aesthetic purpose than a sexual one.

Benefits of Hafada Piercings:

  • Hafada piercings can be placed anywhere on the scrotum, and there is no limit to how many you can get. Some men have their entire scrotums pierced with hafada piercings.
  • Captive rings, circular barbells, micro straight barbells, or bent barbells can be worn in scrotum piercings. When you get a scrotal piercing, bent barbells may be the best jewelry to wear because they will hug the curves of your scrotum.
  • It is possible to add an attractive touch to a male’s genitals by piercing the scrotum.

Drawbacks of Hafada Piercings:

  • Hafada piercings are surface piercings, so it’s important to be pierced as deeply as possible and to avoid fine-gauge jewelry to avoid migration or rejection.
  • There are no physical sexual benefits to the wearer or their partners from scrotal piercings.
  • It takes an average of 2 to 3 months for these piercings to heal.

PERINEUM PIERCINGS

There is a stretch of skin between the scrotum and the anus known as the perineum. As this area is an erogenous zone, getting a guiche piercing in this area can be somewhat stimulating for the wearer, especially if the jewelry is manipulated and pressure is applied to the skin surrounding the piercing once it has healed.

Benefits of Guiche Piercings:

  • Once healed, Guiche piercings can be sexually stimulating for the wearer if they are gently manipulated.
  • Captive rings (including D-rings), circular barbells, micro straight barbells, and bent barbells can all be worn in a guiche piercing. The way bent barbells cradle the perineum makes them ideal for this exercise.
  • If you wear a ring in your guiche piercing, you can attach weights to it once the piercing is healed to provide added stimulation. D-rings are an excellent choice for this.

Drawbacks of Guiche Piercings:

  • The perineum is a surface piercing, so it’s best to be pierced as deeply as possible and wear heavier-gauge jewelry to reduce the chances of migration and rejection.
  • The healing process of guiche piercings usually takes two to three months.
  • Guiche piercings do not provide physical sexual benefits for partners, however, they can be mentally enticing. This is particularly true if you show your partner how to manipulate your jewelry to titillate your perineum.

ANAL PIERCINGS

Though they’re technically not genital piercings, anal piercings are considered to be the 15th type of male genital piercing. The male recipient of this piercing seems to enjoy it since it is a less common one. The anus is actually quite an erogenous area, which makes sense.

Benefits of Anal Piercings:

  • When gently manipulated by a partner during sex, anal piercings can be highly stimulating for the wearer.
  • Male genital piercings such as this do not completely prevent you from having a sexual life while they heal. With an anal piercing, you can have intercourse, engage in self-stimulation, and even enjoy oral sex without affecting the healing process.

Piercings of the anal regions have several drawbacks:

  • Due to the delicate positioning of anal piercings and people’s varying attentiveness to aftercare, anal piercings can take anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months to heal.
  • Throughout the healing process, there can be intermittent anal leakage. Some men may need to wear absorbent pads while they are healing.
  • With anal piercings, there is a risk of damaging the sphincter.
  • It’s hard to keep them clean, and you have to use a saline piercing aftercare spray every time you defecate.
  • You might not want to get an anal piercing if you have constipation problems. You may also suffer from undue pressure on your anal piercing due to internal pressure.
  • For anal piercings, only captive rings (preferably of the segment or seamless variety) are appropriate.

Are there sexual benefits?

Your partner or you may benefit sexually from certain penis piercings.

For your benefit

During masturbation and oral or penetrative sex, the glans or shaft are stimulated by movement, leading to increased pleasure.

This increased sensation is widely regarded as a characteristic of Prince Albert.

For your partner’s benefit

In addition to stimulating additional nerves in the vagina, clitoris, or anus, some piercings enhance penetrative sex.

The following may be included:

  • ampallang
  • apadravya
  • frenum
  • magic cross

Can anyone get a piercing?

If the piercing you want will fit your anatomy, your piercer can help you decide.

You will not be able to get a foreskin piercing if your penis has been circumcised.

Piercings, especially those on the glans or shaft, may interfere with your ability to use condoms and urinate.

Jewelry positioned through the urethra can also penetrate thin condom materials.

It won’t affect your fertility if you get your penis pierced.

What types of jewelry are used for this piercing?

Depending on where the piercing is, the type of jewelry varies. Your piercer might recommend:

  • Circular Barbell: This circular barbell is shaped like a horseshoe, but with removable beads attached to the ends. Select yours here.
  • The Captive Bead Ring: The captive bead ring consists of a circular ring with a single removable bead at its center. Select yours here.
  • Straight Barbell: A straight barbell is a rod-shaped barbell with removable beads at both ends. Select yours here.

What material options are available for your jewelry?

Consider the following options with your piercer:

  • Surgical titanium. Hypoallergenic and ideal for people with sensitive skin
  • Biocompatible polymers (plastics). Safe, flexible, and durable for initial piercings
  • Niobium. This is another hypoallergenic material that doesn’t degrade as quickly as other metals
  • Gold. During the healing process, it is recommended to wear jewelry made of 14-karat yellow or white gold; gold-plated jewelry can lead to allergies and infections
  • Platinum. Despite being more expensive and harder to find, it is highly recommended because it is durable and sturdy

How much does this piercing usually cost?

At the very least, you should prepare to spend $50 to $60. Here is a breakdown of typical costs:

  • Pricing for piercing services. This can range anywhere from $40 to more than $100. Depending on the complexity of the job or the delicate nature of the tissue, some piercings cost more.
  • The cost of jewelry. Gold, diamond, or platinum can cost hundreds of dollars, while titanium or steel can cost as little as $15.
  • Tip for your piercer. At least 20 percent – if not more – should be left for your piercer.

How is this piercing done?

During your piercing, you can expect:

  1. Sterilize the area by putting on sterile gloves and washing it.
  2. Mark where the needle will enter and exit with a marker.
  3. The needle should be pushed into the entry hole and out of the exit hole. When they insert the needle, you will probably be asked to breathe in and out slowly.
  4. When inserting jewelry, hold the skin gently with forceps.
  5. Make sure the area is clean and bandaged.

Will it hurt?

Depending on the circumstances. The pain of some may be less intense than that of others.

The location of the piercing makes a huge difference. The glans, for example, have more nerve endings than the foreskin.

What risks are associated with this piercing?

Talk to your piercer about the following possibilities:

  • injuring your partner’s genitals during sex
  • increased risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • infection at the piercing site
  • tissues rejecting the piercing

How long does it take to heal?

Typically, a penis piercing heals within three months. The healing process may take longer if you do not follow your piercer’s aftercare instructions.

During the first few days, you may experience mild pain and swelling as well as light bleeding.

As part of the healing process, this is normal.

If you experience these symptoms, you should consult your piercer:

  • yellow or green pus
  • skin that’s hot to the touch
  • fever

How to clean and care for your piercing

It is crucial that you clean your piercing properly to ensure its success.

As part of the healing process, do the following:

  • A bandage should be applied to the affected area, and it should be changed at least once a day.
  • Hands should be washed with gentle soap and warm water before touching the area.
  • Rinse your piercing with distilled water and saline solution at least twice a day.
  • Remove any crust that forms by gently washing and rinsing.
  • When you rinse your penis, pat it dry with a clean paper towel.
  • While you’re showering, avoid getting your penis wet.
  • Carefully put on your clothes after you take them off.
  • You can use condoms (after initial pain and swelling have subsided) until the area is completely healed.

At the same time, avoid:

  • Do not touch the piercing with dirty hands.
  • If you are experiencing pain and swelling, have sex (oral, genital, or anal) or masturbate until the pain and swelling subside.
  • Make sure your underwear or clothing is tight.
  • To clean the area, rinse with an alcohol-based solution.
  • Ensure that the piercing is clean by using antiseptic rinses or soaps.
  • In the bath or pool, submerge your penis.
  • Make sure that the penis is not jostled around or injured when you are playing sports or engaging in other vigorous activities.
  • If you play with the jewelry or remove it for a while (about 3 months), the piercing will heal.
  • Allow your pubic hair to become tangled in the jewelry.

Symptoms to watch for

The first few days after getting a new piercing may cause some swelling and irritation. Most of this goes away after a few days.

If you experience symptoms of infection or rejection, you should contact your piercer:

  • Over time, intense pain gets worse
  • Several large swellings
  • Skin that is unusually hot
  • Pus or discharge with a greenish or yellowish tinge
  • There is a stinky smell emanating from the area
  • The bumps are red and itchy
  • Jewelry that falls out of place, even after a few days or weeks
  • Jewelry falling out and cannot be put back in without a lot of effort

How long does a healed piercing last?

In most non-traditional piercings, the skin may grow back around the piercing over time, causing the jewelry to fall out.

When this will happen is not set in stone.

If you care for your piercing properly, the piercing will last a few months or a few years, depending on your individual tissues.

How to change the jewelry

You should wait until your piercing has healed before changing your jewelry.

Your piercer will be able to tell you if it is ready. If you prefer, they can change it out for you.

Here’s how you can change it safely:

  1. Warm water and antibacterial soap can be used to thoroughly clean your hands.
  2. Saline solution should be applied to the piercing area.
  3. Beads from the current jewelry should be gently removed.
  4. The jewelry should be carefully removed from the hole.
  5. You should remove any beads from your new jewelry.
  6. The new jewelry should be pushed firmly but carefully through the hole.
  7. Replenish the jewelry with any beads that were removed.
  8. Make sure it is secure and won’t fall out when you walk or move about.
  9. Repeat the saline solution rinse on the piercing site once more. Pat the area dry with a soft towel.

How to retire the piercing

Do not remove jewelry until the piercing has completely healed. Doing so prevents bacteria from building up in the hole.

If you’re still in the healing process and can’t wait, speak with your piercer. You’ll know whether or not you can take it out when you talk to them.

After removing the jewelry, clean the area for a few more weeks until the penis tissues are fully healed. Failure to do so will increase your risk of infection or disfiguring the tissue.

Take out your piercing if it’s already healed and let the opening heal naturally. You don’t need to do anything else after that.

You should talk to your prospective piercer

You should only get your penis pierced by a professional at a well-reviewed, reputable shop.

From ideal placement to potential risks to individual healing times and aftercare, they can provide a wealth of knowledge.

Talk to a doctor or other healthcare provider if you have concerns about how your body might respond to a penis piercing. A medical or anatomical limitation that could increase your risk of complications can be discussed with them.

You should also keep in mind that this kind of piercing isn’t for everyone – in some cases, your skin type or body might not be suited for it, and that’s okay.
