For some people, it holds a very important place and for the others, it is a matter of shame. Many people have a negative impression when it comes to scars and they go to length to hide them by using makeup or surgery but some just embrace them proudly.

Now, Hollywood is the land of famous celebrities who often act as role models for people. They are an emblem of perfect look but that doesn’t mean they are any different from us. Many celebrities have scars. While some hide them, others are proud to own them. You can see celebs sharing their stories about their scars telling people how very normal it is to have them. • Kate Middleton

In the right picture, you can see Kate Middleton with a 3-inch scar in her hairline. Many made assumptions that the scar was a result of hair extensions. However, the assumptions were contradicted when the Palace came out with a statement clearing the rumors, stating, “The scar is related to a childhood operation.” While we do not have much information about the “childhood operation”, we sure do know that the Duchess wears her scar like her crown.

• Amy Schumer

Amy Schumer is a strong and outspoken person when it comes to speaking about generalized beauty standards. She gave birth via operation to her first child and while she has a huge scar in her abdomen, she has not shied away from it. Amy addressed this issue in her Instagram post, where she is seen lifting up her top and revealing the scar. The post has a caption that says, “I’m really sorry if I offended anyone with my hospital underwear, except I’m just kidding.” That’s quite strong and liberating of a celebrity to speak about the insecurities so openly!

• Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez is often seen getting emotional about her kidney transplant which she had in 2017. She had a rare condition called “Lupus”. Her best friend, Francia Raisa, was brave enough to support her in her time of need and offered to donate her kidney. However, this left both the strong women with a mark for a lifetime. In 2018, Selena took to Instagram to open up about the scar as she posed confidently in her swimsuit while she was on vacation in Australia. She captioned the picture as, “The beauty myth- an obsession with physical perfection that traps modern woman in an endless cycle of hopelessness, self-consciousness, and self-hatred as she tries to fulfill society’s impossible definition of flawless beauty.”

• Malin Anderson

Malin Anderson has had a rough time after she lost her daughter at four weeks in early 2019. While the loss of the former Love Islander’s daughter was heartbreaking, she developed a sense of love and appreciation for her body and a better image. She accepted that it was something she had struggled with all her life. She now treasures the scar that came with the Cesarian section. In an interview, she said, “I had an emergency C section so now I’m living with a scar and a pouch of fat above it. It’s going to be there for the rest of my life, but I look at it and I think it’s so beautiful because I carried this baby. I look at myself in the mirror and I’m actually more pleased with myself than I’ve ever been in my life.”

• Prince William

I guess Kate Middleton isn’t alone when it comes to a scar story. Her husband, Prince William has one too. In an interview, Williams called it a “Harry Potter scar” and we must say that it is quite a positive approach to it. Just like Kate Middleton, he got the scar during his childhood too. He was hit by a golf club in his teen years which left with some marks on his left forehead. To quote him exactly, “I call it [my Harry Potter scar] because it glows sometimes and some people notice it — other times they don’t notice it at all.”

• Lena Dunham

Did you know that Lena Dunham has endometriosis which she has also documented to create awareness? Resultingly, she had to go through a series of operations which led her to have permanent scars on her body. However, she did not let these things faze her from loving herself. She is pretty comfortable with how she look and she even took it to Instagram with a picture of her in a bikini addressing the issue. The caption that she wrote said, “When the Target swimsuit does a bitch right, endo scars & all”.

• Princess Eugenie

Princess Eugenie was the talk of the town on her wedding day to Jack Brooksbank in 2018 and everyone was curious to know more about her wedding dress too. The princess took this opportunity to address a bigger issue on such a big day. As a matter of fact, Eugenie was diagnosed with Scoliosis, where the person has a curved backbone. Although she is 28 years of age now, she was diagnosed when she was just 12! She went through certain surgeries to correct her condition and it led to a huge scar on her back which descends from the nape of her neck. he wore a deep back Peter Pilotto dress that showed this scar off perfectly with her high bun hairdo. Prior to her wedding, she told in an interview that her wedding dress was  “a lovely way to honor the people who looked after me and a way of standing up for young people who also go through this.”

• Gabby Allen

Just like princess Eugenie, Gabby Allen, the star of Love Island 2017, was diagnosed with Scoliosis too when she was a mere child. However, she is quite open and confident about it. Just like Eugenie, her scar runs down her back too. She is not even a bit embarrassed or self-conscious about it and is rather confident to sport a bikini. She even showed off her scar in a post on Instagram, during her vacation to Mykonos. The fitness trainer posted a picture of herself in a bikini with the caption, “Be proud of your bodies. Accept them for what they are. Forgive them for what they’re not. Understand them when they need a rest. Support them. Believe in them! Love them!”

• Tina Fey

Tina Fey looked stunning when she came to the stage of the 2020 Oscars. But did you notice the scar she has on the left side of her face? It is right there just under her lips. It is related to a childhood accident which is rather shocking. As a 5-year-old child, Tina Fey was out playing in the garden when a stranger approached her and attacked her with a knife. Her husband, Jeff Richmon opened up about this act in an interview, saying, “She just thought somebody marked her with a pen.” For Tina, it was normal until she began to work on the screen and she began to feel conscious about it. She said,  “I’m kind of able to forget about it until I was on-camera.” If you ever noticed, many of her scenes are shot in a way such that her right side is more visible.

• Olivia Buckland

Another Love Inland star of 2016, Olivia Buckland had a scar on her back, near her underarm. She got a lump removed recently which gave her this scar. According to her, the lump which was removed had been there for more than four years. She finally took the courage to get it to check and removed just before her wedding. She took to Instagram to clear the air about her lump, stating that, “It turned out to be a lipoma. Had it for a good four years and finally plucked up the courage before the wedding to have it removed. It was cut out and was about 3×3 inches!” Olivia has said her scar is healing well.

• Kaley Cuoco

We all know Penny from The Big Bang Theory but did anyone know that she has a scar on her foot? Kaley Cuoco is not afraid to show off her scar and it is especially evident on any big event like the Red Carpet. She got the scar after an accident when she was practicing horse riding in 2010. She fell off a horse that crushed her leg. The accident was pretty severe.

• Jonah Hill

Jonah Hill is a proud owner of a rather aggressive and huge scar that is right near his elbow. It is a big one and so hard to hide. You might have seen the actor in movies like 21 Jump Street or The Wolf of the Wallstreet. What it looks like is extremely haunting. It seems like the two pieces of the arm has been put back together. To put it in Jonah Hill’s own words, “This is one of the biggest things ever in my life.” In fact, when he was in middle school, his mom was going through cancer and he was sure that she’s not going to recover. Jonah then started to act and even started skateboarding and smoking weed. His studies were suffering. “I was, like, not a good kid,” he says. One night he and one of his friends snuck out of their houses with an SUV and Jonah’s elbow was out of the window. While joking around with the car, the car met with an accident and flipped over and dragged Jonah’s arm with it. Next, Hill woke up in the hospital bed where doctors were discussing if his arm should be amputated or not. Of course, his family was there, crying and Hill made a promise to himself that he will not let anyone done. To quote his words, “I said to myself, ‘I’ll never let them down ever again.’ I said, ‘I’m going to be successful. I’m going to resurrect what I put these people through by being a little asshole.’ So I look at this scar every day. That reminds me to work hard.” His scar is a reminder for him to be on track and work harder.

• Harrison Ford

Harrison Ford’s scar on his chin, just below his lower lip, is a trademark and all his true fans know that he has it. However, he got it in an accident too. It was in 1964,  “A fast car crash, a real mundane way of earning it”, he said in an interview. He had to go to work near the beach in California, USA but one day while driving there he lost his balance while trying to put his seat belt on and immediately hit a pole. His head hit the steering wheel. He was stuck in this bleeding situation for hours until someone noticed him and took him to the hospital. The scar is so poignant that it has been used in his movies too and different versions have been made out of it. For example, in movies like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade he cut his chin with a whip during his childhood days. In Working Girl, his scar has been portrayed as something which he has while trying to pierce his own ear and fainting on seeing the blood, hitting his chin on the toilet seat.

• Tommy Flanagan

Tommy Flanagan’s popularity rose with his movie ‘Braveheart’ which came out in 1995 along with Mel Gibson. You might also know him from the TV series, Sons of Anarchy, where he plays the character, Chibs. Living in a dark area of Scotland, Tommy got into a brawl while leaving a pub. Few men attacked him in order to rob him. Of course, he fought back but was stabbed. The person ripped his face from ear to ear giving him what is known as the Glasgow Smile. However, he recovered but was left with a scar that is a major part of his identity.

• Inigo Montoya

If you have seen The Princess Bride, you might know that Inigo Montoya is playing the role of a Spanish fencer. In real life, Inigo’s father, Domingo, is a Swordcrafter who liked to remain obscure because of his own preferences. Now how this scar came to life is a matter of deep interest. It could be a movie in itself. So Count Rugen came to Inigo’s father to get himself a personalized sword made for his 6 fingered hand and to fit his unusual grip. Domingo tried to the best of his ability to make a great sword and when Rugen came back to claim the sword, he renegade on the previously fixed price. Therefore, Domingo refused to give the sword which made Rugen angry. Domingo gave the sword to his son, Inigo and in his anger, Rugen killed Domingo. Inigo was a witness to the situation and angered, he challenged Rugen to a sword fight. Of course, Rugen was much more skilled than Inigo and got him disarmed in minutes. He, however, spared the child’s life but gave him a scar right on his face so that he could teach him a lesson”.

• Seal (Henry Olusegun Adeola Samuel)

Henry Olusegun Adeola Samuel, also known as Seal, is a Nigerian singer whose scar was rumored to be part of a tribal sacrifice which involved self-mutilation rites. In an interview, however, Seal cleared the air by telling everyone that as a child, he suffered from a disease called Discoid Lupus Erythematosus which is a severe skin condition. This disease can cause a serious inflammation on the skin, lesion, scars and hair loss too. He went through many surgeries to cure his ailment and luckily enough, he is recovering. However, he is proud of his scars as it means victory for him.

• Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol is a great name when it comes to the great visual art moment which is referred to as ‘Pop art’ in America. His work emphasizes the relation between celeb culture, advertisement and the artist’s impression. It was a huge deal in the 60s. In 1968, Warhol and his mate Mario Amaya, an art critic and curator were shot at by Valerie Solanas in Warhol’s studio. The attack was because Solanas had been fired after asking for the return of a script which she submitted to Warhol because it was misplaced. While Mario Amaya did not receive many injuries, Warhol was wounded heavily that he could barely survive. However, the doctors tried their best to save him by cutting open his chest and reviving his heart. Luckily, he survived the attack but face the repercussions his entire life. He had to wear a corset at all times. This incident had an immense effect on his work and life. The attacker was immediately arrested and she made a statement where she said that Warhol had “had too much control over my life.” She was given three-year imprisonment. Andy Warhol in an interview said about this incident that, “Before I was shot, I always thought that I was more half-there than all-there. I always suspected that I was watching TV instead of living life. People sometimes say that the way things happen in movies is unreal, but actually it’s the way things happen in life that’s unreal. The movies make emotions look so strong and real, whereas when things really do happen to you, it’s like watching television—you don’t feel anything. Right when I was being shot and ever since, I knew that I was watching television. The channels switch, but it’s all television.”

• Joaquin Phoenix

Joaquin Phoenix is a great actor which is quite apparent by his latest movie, Joker which won many accolades. However, his identity is his scar which is between his nose and lips. There was a rumor that this scar is a result of a surgery that was done to correct the cleft palate but Phoenix actually cleared the air by telling that it is a birthmark. His scar was formed in the uterus as a mild cleft palate known as microform cleft. He called his scar  “Merely a birthmark”.

• Queen Latifah

The scar that is right in the middle of Queen Latifah’s forehead and beginning from her hairline has been there since her childhood days. In an interview, she explained the reason for her scar, that is, “Playing tag with my brother,” she said. “I tripped over the telephone cord and hit my head on the corner of the bathroom wall. I got three stitches. Then I fell on my grandmother’s steps and busted it open again. I was three. I was a clumsy child. I’d never cover it up, it gives my face character.”

• Sharon Stone

Sharon Stone has a huge scar that looks quite dramatic, to be honest, and which she has to conceal for her roles and advertisements. However, her dramatic scar is something to talk about because it is quite huge. She says that the scar is because of a childhood incident when she was riding a horse that ran into a wire where clothes were hung and which ripped her neck open. She is so proud of the scar that she has a website dedicated entirely to that and it is called  SharonStonesScar.com. However, it is no longer functional.

• Parminder Nagra

You might remember Parminder Nagra from the movies like ER, Alcatraz, The Blacklist and the most popular one, Bend it Like Beckham. However, the scar on her thigh appeared only in her role in Bend it Like Beckham which was due to a childhood incident. She was just seven years of age when she burnt her thigh which left her with a scar. It was during a meal prep when the fire caught her trousers. She immersed her thigh in cold water afterward. Her scar story is included in the film to give a definition to the scar in the movie. However, it does not seem like she has the need to hide it; She owns it.

• Michael K. Williams

Michael K Williams is best known for two of his roles, that are, Omar Litter from the series, The Wire, and the role of Albert Chalky White from the show, Broadwalk Empire. His scar is a part of his identity which he shows off proudly. He got into a bar fight when he just turned 25. The fight was between a group of guys and his friends. A guy attacked him in his face with a razor and cut him across which nearly cost him his life. The scar appears to be pretty rough and thanks to it, he landed in a music video as a thug. The scar proved to be lucky for him and he eventually embraced it. Hs scar story was huge and became his trademark with photographers like David LaChapelle asking him for a photoshoot.

• Padma Lakshmi

Padma Lakshmi is one of America’s superfine Top Chef and a great actress. But even she has a scar which she shows off proudly.  The scar was a part of an accident in 1984 in Malibu, California. This led to a crushed arm and a fractured hip. The arm was recovered surgically and the vertical scar is a result of that. However, she has completely recovered from the injuries. The incident took place when she was just 14 years of age and coming back home from a Hindu temple. Padma Lakshmi talked about her scar in an interview in 2001 with Vogue magazine and described the horrific accident in a beautiful way. To use her exact words, she said,  “Being in a car crash was like an exhilarating hallucination, an unbelievable moment that oddly remains one of the most beautiful images in my memory.” Seems like she is proud of her scar.

• Catherine Zeta-Jones

Catherine Zeta-Jones is popular for her pretty face but did you know that she suffered from a virus in childhood that made it impossible for her to breathe normally. She underwent surgery which left a permanent scar on her neck. Although being in a profession like this, she could have easily thought of getting rid of the scar by sanding the scar using surgical procedures, but, Catherine did not want to do it. She thinks that it was a life-changing event for her and the scar would always remain there as a reminder. In her words: “Makeup artists are always trying to cover it up, but I don’t want to hide it. I wouldn’t be here today if I didn’t have this scar.”

• Steve Buscemi

Steve Buscemi does not look like someone who would get into a bar fight or any kind of a fight with anyone, for that matter. However, he got this huge scar exactly like that. In 2001, while shooting for Domestic Disturbance in North Carolina, Steve, along with his colleagues, Vince Vaughn (co-actor) and Scott Rosenberg (screenwriter) went out to a bar called Firebelly Lounge. The trouble began when a lady approached Vaughn which led to a fight between her boyfriend and the actor. It immediately started a brawl and involved multiple people. Steve Buscemi was stabbed by a guy called Timothy Fogerty who attacked him with a knife on his face. He was stabbed multiple times in the eye, his jaw, throat, and arms. This incident could have ended his life but instead just gave him some permanent scars. He covers his scars with makeup during filming any movies. Interestingly, after the incident, Vaughn and Rosenberg were not allowed to visit any bars and condemned to attend alcohol sessions while the man who stabbed Steve was sent to prison for using lethal weapons.

• Sarah Hyland

Sarah Hyland is one of the actors who sports her scars with confidence. She got a kidney transplant in 2012 which gave her a scar near her abdomen. She never hid her scar and is quite vocal about it on social media. She often posts bikini pics with hashtags like #showyourscars. Clearly, she wants to spread awareness about the fact that scars are nothing to be ashamed of.

• Sanaa Lathan

Sanaa has a little scar on the left side of her face that was due to a childhood accident. Her injury was because she was playing with some playdough using an actual oven. Her experiments during childhood left her with permanent damage.

• Sandra Bullock

Sarah Bullock has a tiny scar just above her eye which was due to an accident as she fell into a waterway. The scar was there since she was a child but it gets covered up during the filmings by the use of makeup.

• Keanu Reeves

Keanu went through surgery after he broke his ribs and spleen in a motorcycle crash in Topanga Canyon. As a bit of an adventure buff, he was trying on a ‘demon ride’, which is basically driving without headlights at night and as a result, he crashed into a side of the mountain. He was hospitalized for a week after that.

You might have noticed Jason Momoa’s scar that he wears proudly even on screen. The scar was due to a brawl in the Birds Cafe situated in California where he was attacked by a man with a broken beer glass. The injury led him to have 140 stitches on his face. It must have been extremely painful but he is proud to show it.

• Mary J. Blige

Mary J Blige never really talked about what caused the scar under her left eye, rumors have it that she got into a fight with some unidentified woman. A second rumor suggests that the Grammy winner had the scar due to a childhood accident which she is not public about. Even if she was not open about how she got the scar, she once said in an interview that, “If I don’t accept the scar on my face, the lips that God gave me, the big giant feet, the long legs, whatever it is that I’m deformed with, I got to love it so everybody else can love it. And I started loving it.”

Little Mix’s member, Perrie Edwards is not really shy of the scars that she got during her childhood as a part of some surgery procedure.

• Cpl. J.R. Martinez

Cpl J.R. Martinez was sent off to Iraq when he was just 19 years old. The Humvee he was driving hit a landmine just after a month that he was stationed, and he got severe burns all over his body. A part of the Airborne Division, Martinez is now an actor and the winner of Dancing with Champions who is not shy of his scars. He underwent many therapies and surgeries and also made it a point to visit others who are undergoing the same situation. He explained the grafting procedure as “Once a burn patient is stabilized, the treatment depends on how large an area has been affected. New skin must be either taken from another area of the body, grown from the patient’s own cells or applied from an artificial graft,”

• Ariel Winter

Ariel Winters has a scar under her breast because of the breast reduction surgery that she underwent in the year 2016. In the SAG event the same year, she showed off her scars in a beautiful black dress. However, many people considered the visible scar as a wardrobe malfunction, but Ariel Winters took it to twitter to address the issue. She tweeted that, Guys there is a reason I didn’t make an effort to cover up my scars! They are part of me and I’m not ashamed of them at all. :)”

• Francia Raisa

Francia Raisa, Selena Gomez’s best friend, and her kidney donor made headlines after they came out from a successful kidney transplant. Both Selena and Raisa were left with a scar after their procedures which they haven’t been shy to show off. In an interview, Rasia said, “Your scars don’t define you. It’s a part of your story. It’s a part of the story that makes you special and you different.”

• 50 Cent

50 Cent getting into fights is something we can imagine and he has been quite open about it too. He has been shot nine times and one of it was right in his face which left him with a scar and a swollen tongue.

• Al Capone

One of the scariest events in history was that of Al Capone. He is said to have the most famous scar ever. Many newspapers gave him the nickname “Scarface”.  He is himself said to be very aversed of his scars and often hid them in pictures. How his scars came to be was always a mystery. According to his statements, it is supposed to be from the war but it was proven to be a lie. Surprisingly, many people came forward taking the credits for giving him the scar while some said that the scars were there since his childhood. Another story states that he got the scars from Frank Galluccio during a confrontation between them in a Coney Island bar where Capone worked as a bouncer. It is said that Capone approached Galluccio’s sister and made lewd comments like “I’ll tell you one thing, you got a nice a** honey and I mean that as a compliment.” and made her feel uncomfortable. He even denied the request made by Galluccio for an apology to the girl saying that it was meant to be a joke. This led to a fight between them where Capone started towards Galluccio to attack him. Galluccio was ready with a knife to slash Capone and that’s how the scars came to life on his face and neck.

• Sean Bean

Sean Bean is amazing at death scenes that he has too many of them as a part of his role on screen. He is also known for a scar over his eye which was a result of a small accident on the set of Patriot Games with Harrison Ford. Ford hit the Game of Thrones actor straight in the face because he was upset about his own scars. The scene was not really included in the film but the scar on Sean Bean is quite visible. For the rest of the movie, the director had to hide his scar with makeup and fake blood in order to hide the sudden changes in his appearance.

• Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran is the most recent one on the list and his facial scar is quite a recent one too. It was during a party last year where Princess Beatrice, daughter of the Duke of York, Prince Andrew, tried knighting James Blunt, who actually wanted to be knighted. And Beatrice, who wanted to host a successful party obliged to this request. She took her father’s sword and started her process. Here, an accident happened. She was not really in practice ad accidentally struck the sword while swinging it back on Ed Sheeran’s cheek. Although Ed Sheeran was later requested not to let this little mishappening out in order to protect the family from any embarrassment and maintain the honor, the news somehow leaked. Probably because the party had hundreds of guests.

• Dermot Mulroney

Dermot Mulroney has been in the industry for quite a long time in Hollywood and has done very well for himself. However, his scar that is a part of his face and stays above his lip is a part of his image. It has been with him for almost the whole of his life. He got it when he was just a child and he spoke about it in an interview, saying, “I was three-and-a-half and I was carrying a dish for our pet rabbits. And I tripped and it broke, and I fell on it. I definitely remember that day, even though I was 3 years old. I don’t think about it or see it, but it’s always been there,” he recalled. “It certainly has its place on my face, right below my right nostril. That’s where it belongs.” And now, it has just become a part of his identity.

• Miles Teller

Although the scars on Miles Teller’s face are not really visible when seen from a distance, but actors have a variety of shots and a close up is just a part of their filming process. It is during these shots that you may notice a few small scars on his face. He was actually a part of a car crash when he was 20 years old. Teller narrates his little tale in an interview and said, “My buddy lost control of my car going 80 mph. We flipped eight times. I got ejected out the window. The car landed and I was just laying like 50 feet from the car, unconscious, covered in blood. My buddy thought I was dead.” Afterward, he even took many sessions to remove his scars but still some of them are quite visible. Apparently, they are not completely gone. In fact, during the accident, he also got some tiny stones in his face which he did not get removed because it would have caused more scarring.

• Richard Lynch

Richard Lynch is a well-known actor and has worked well in the industry for a long time. He has been a part of amazing movies and shows and has been known the best for his role in Battlestar Galactica. What’s so different about him is also his facial scars which have been a part of him for a long time. If you remember, you saw a lot of it in the Rob Zombie movies like Halloween and the Lords of Salem. The story behind the scars is not really known yet. He never really spoke about it in detail but all we know is that he got the scars while on LSD and went for a walk in Central Park. During the walk, he lit himself on fire and that’s that.

It was during his freshman year at the college, which by the way is the University of Florida, Adrian Pasdar got into a bad car accident. The Heroes star was left in scars after the incident mainly on his cheeks and chin. That was not all! He even injured his leg badly. He was a football player back then but had to quit it because of the injury. He joined acting afterward. It was probably for the best.

• Mickey Rourke

Mickey Rourke does not really have a very attractive face which is actually just full of scars. The actor was a boxer before and so injuries were always a part of his career. Due to these injuries, he had to get a lot of surgeries during the 90s but apparently, none of them worked very well and he did not have a clear face. The actor later claimed that probably his choice was not really right and he should have been more careful.
