Hermanus “Herman” Brood was a Dutch musician, actor, poet, and painter. Known famously as, “the greatest and only Dutch rock ‘n’ roll star”, he was a successful musician and then, later on, became a painter. The musician faced a controversial death as he jumped from a hotel roof to his death because of his failure to abstain from drugs and alcohol. Herman has some interesting inks on his body, covering both of his arms. Let us see what tattoos he had and the meanings behind them.
1. ‘Banner’ Tattoo
Tattoo: Herman’s right shoulder had a banner on it with the name, “Doreen” tattooed inside it.
Meaning: The tattoo of the name, “Doreen” represents the name of the song, Doreen by Herman Brood and His Wild Romance. The Wild Romance was the backing band of Herman Brood.
2. ‘Plane and Fly’ Tattoo
Tattoo: The upper right arm of the singer had a large airplane tattooed on it with smoke coming out its back and mixing with the clouds in the background. There was also a housefly tattooed below the plane, near his elbow.
Meaning: The tattoo of the plane on his arm went along with his lifestyle of drugs, alcohol, rock n roll, and traveling. The plane represented his freedom and independence of thought.
3. ‘Snake and Beavis’ Tattoo
Tattoo: There was a large snake tattooed on the upper side of his right forearm, emerging from an instrument, with a cloud over its head with the dollar sign inside it to show that it is thinking of money. The side of his right forearm also had a tattoo of the upper half of Beavis, with the word, “COOL” tattooed next to him.
Meaning: The character on his arm is Beavis from the famous adult animated sitcom, “Beavis and Butt-head” from the 1990s which was one of his favorite shows.
4. UFO Tattoo
Tattoo: The upper part of Herman’s right wrist had a tattoo of a UFO on it with a tiny word tattooed next to it.
5. ‘POP’ Tattoo
Tattoo: The word, “POP” was tattooed on the singer’s left shoulder inside a rectangle along with a small drop of liquid tattooed below it.
6. ‘Dr. Pepper’ Tattoo
Tattoo: The upper part of the musician’s left arm has a tattoo of the words, “Dr. Pepper” tattooed on it. There was also a symbol tattooed below the words.
Meaning: The words on his arm represent the logo of the famous drink, Dr. Pepper which might have been one of his favorite beverages.
7. Girl Tattoo
Tattoo: The upper side of his left forearm had a small tattoo of the face of a cartoon girl on it wearing a scarf and a hat.
8. Target Tattoo
Tattoo: The upper side of his left forearm also had a target tattooed on it with a cross inside a circle. There was also a tic tac toe game design tattooed above the target.
9. ‘Plant’ Tattoo
Tattoo: The upper left wrist of the musician had a tattoo of a plant on it. The tattoo is done loosely and could also be mistaken for an arrow but is actually a sapling.
He used a lot of amphetamine. Another Dutch word for amphetamine is ‘pep’ which means boost. So he called himself Dr Pepper. His favourite drink was grand marnier and creme de menthe R.I.P Herman
Doreen was his girlfriend for a while.
