We have known Johnny Depp as a teenage sweetheart since his 21 Jump Street days. Being one of the Hollywood’s greatest stars, he has always taken up challenging and “greater-than-life” roles. Depp’s interest for ink is very apparent from his various tattoos. Take a look!
Johnny’s first tattoo was a Cherokee Indian chief in order to honor his Indian heritage. It is made on his right bicep.
2. Betty Sue
Depp has his mother’s name. Betty Sue inked inside a heart on his upper left arm. Sweet, isn’t it?
For his utmost dedication to his then girlfriend, Winona Ryder, he inked “Winona Forever” on his upper right arm. After the breakup, though, he changed it to “Wino Forever”. Creative, Depp. Very creative.
Johnny tattooed an inverted triangle just above his mother’s name. The triangle was originally drawn by the Russian painter, Ilya Chasnik. Maybe this piece had political significance for Depp.
He got the symbol of his movie, “The Brave” (1997), tattooed inside his right arm.
6. Three Triangles
Described by Depp as “permanent phone doodles”, one can find three triangles tattooed on his right index finger.
He has a number 3 on his left hand. He said, “3 is a sort of special number for me. It’s a very creative number. Triangle, trinity — you know, two people make another person. Three is a mystical, magical number.”
He has his daughter’s name, Lily Rose, tattooed across his chest. He likes to keep it “close to his heart”.
9. Pirates of The Caribbean
From the movie Pirates of the Caribbean – The Curse of the Black Pearl he took the tattoo on his right forearm, turned it around, so that the bird flies towards Johnny, and added his son’s name.
Holding very pragmatic views, Johnny Depp inked the lower part of his right leg with a skull and crossbones with ‘death is certain‘ below.
A question mark can be found over the ankle of his right leg.
On his arm can be seen a tattoo and it reads “Silence Exile Cunning”, a quote from a book by James Joyce titled “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man”.
Three hearts can be seen on Depp’s upper left arm and represents his family, Vanessa and his two kids.
14. Father and Mother
The tattoo on his right arm is his grandfather as a sailor whereas the tattoo on the other arm shows his mother in a waitress uniform (at Holiday Inn).
15. Gonzo Fist
He has a Gonzo fist on his left shin.
16. Skull Again
This time on his upper right arm.
17. Salve Ogum
Outside his left arm, Johnny has an “Ogum” tattoo and the writing “Salve Ogum“. Ogum is an Afro-American deity. ‘Salve’ is Portuguese/Latin and means “save”. He got it when he was on a trip to Hawaii.
Johnny has three small dots on his left ankle. This guy surely loves number 3 so much.
Johnny has a rook below his Salve Olgum tattoo based on an Eastern Kentucky’s cards game called “Rook“. He changed the two cards the rook holds into three, later on.
20. Skeleton Key
Here’s what Depp said on this one: “One was a skeleton key because for me when I was a child, I thought that a skeleton key could literally open any door. So that if you ever got your hands on a skeleton key, you’d be almost unstoppable—no barrier could hold you back. It seemed like an incredibly magical thing. For me now, that’s still what it represents.”
21. No Reason
Depp actually got a “No Reason” for no reason. Here’s what Marilyn Manson has to say about this since he got a similar one on himself: “You know why I did it? No reason at all. I just got “No Reason” tattooed on my wrist. You know why? No reason. So it seems like he and Johnny just thought the matching tattoos would be something fun or interesting to do…for no reason!”
22. Les Fleurs du Mal
Marilyn Manson and Johnny shared the experience of being inked with artwork covering their back inspired by Les Fleurs du Mal by French poet Charles Baudelaire. Manson described it as “the flowers of evil, this giant skeleton thing.”
This is very obvious that Johnny got it with whom. It is “brothers” written in Theban alphabets. Manson says, “This one I actually got with Johnny Depp. It says “brother” on the outside and my name and his name in the middle of it. Mark Mahoney did it.”
A huge “Z“, which looks like a flash, is on Johnny’s left hand. “Z” is a common Native American symbol and motif.
25. Lil’ Guitarist
On the back of his upper left arm is a little guitarist which was drawn by Johnny’s son Jack. Bill Carter got the same tattoo and Vanessa Paradis has a t-shirt with the drawing.
He has a crow tattoo based on a movie called “The Crow (1994)”, which was about a man who was murdered.
Again on his arms, Depp flaunts his snake/lightning tattoo, which symbolizes the primordial energy in Native American Culture.
28. Comanche Shield
A Comanche Shield, on his right shin, in done in honor of his adoption into the Comanche Indian tribe.
29. Man is a Giddy Thing
Drawn by his son, Jack, the letters below a faceless man say “Man is a giddy thing”, which is a line from the Mumford and Sons song “Sigh No More” as well as a from Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing.
30. Slim or…..Scum?
Johnny recently changed his knuckle tattoo “Slim” to “Scum”, which is said to be a reference to his wife Amber Heard, after Amber filed for a divorce.
31. Wind Over Heaven
This tattoo is believed to be “Wind over Heaven” from the I Ching, an ancient Chinese text called Book of Changes. It’s meaning is “Forcing your way will only bring misfortune. Remain focused on your path and remove obstacles with gentle actions.”
