According to the ancient Portuguese legend, there was a theft in Barcelos which is in the east of Braga and the northern part of Portugal. The theft who stole from a landowner’s house could not be found. One day a very suspicious stranger came into the town and was accused of stealing. Although he was innocent, he was stills sentenced to death. During his time one execution, he was asked to prove his innocence by making a dead rooster crow three times. The strange was released because he was able to do so in the presence of everyone and the judge.

Galo de Barcelos is a souvenir that many people who travel to Portugal bring back home. It is represented by a ceramic rooster. • Azulejos

This standard portion of Portuguese construction is omnipresent. From small communities to the largest center of Lisbon the remarkable painted tin-glazed ceramic tiles leap out from every angle.

Everything can be painted with these tiles; from walls of cathedrals and abbeys to castles, houses, park seats, fountains, stores, and even railway stations, for instance, São Bento station in Porto is pretty popular for the same. They usually depict views from the history of the country, show its most impressive sights, or solely agree as street signs or house numbers.

The term Azulejo is taken from the Arabic word az-Zulayj, meaning “polished stone” because the initial thought was to duplicate the Roman collections. The Moors produced this term to the Iberian Peninsula, but Azulejos was truly imported to Portugal from Spain only in the 15th century, quite after the Christian reconquest of the land.

Nevertheless, the variant of the coat of arms used by the military also carries the words Esta é a Ditosa Pátria Minha Amada (this is my brilliant loved Motherland). In this variant, the ribbon is not green and red, but white.

The current flag of Portugal was created after the Republican regime was established here during the 5th October 1910 revolution. A prior version of this flag was created in the 12th century. The modern flag is also regarded as the “Bandeira Verde-Rubra” (Green-Red Flag). The modern flag design was accepted by the Provisional Government of the Portuguese Republic on 29 November 1910 and verified by the National Constituent Assembly through a Decree of 19 June 1911. The management of this decree – with the design blueprints of the national flag, military colors, naval jack, and commissioning pennant – was announced in the Diário do Governo the official journal of Portugal on 30 June 1911. The civil flag was constitutionally approved as a national emblem in the Portuguese Constitution of 1976

Famous Portuguese Proverbs Used in Daily Life

1. “Quem vê Cara não vê coração.”

Literal meaning: “Who sees face does not see the heart.”

Meaning: Do not judge a book by its cover.

A person might look or appear unattractive or dull on the surface but have a wonderful heart. For those times, we might use this phrase in Portuguese.

For instance, if a buddy of yours declines a possible date based on how they look, you might reply, “Quem vê Cara não vê coração.”

Nonetheless, much more frequently Portuguese orators will use this word with a different purpose and a contradictory intention—just because somebody sees rich, strong, beautiful and warm, does not mean their heart is aligned with the others!

As human beings, we seldom serve to believe people we should not—particularly if they look especially sweet, innocent, rich, or successful! This definition is usually applied as a cautionary warning when one sees a character they care about placing way too much support or power in someone else’s perception.

Other definitions that have a comparable application are “Aparências enganam” (“Appearances deceive”) and Nem Tudo o Que reluz é ouro” (“Not everything that shines is gold”). These are also employed when a person is drawn to an occasion that seems bright and hopeful but is way too obstructed to see the dangers!

By the way, if you discover yourself in Portugal, this phrase will oftentimes be understood in its plural version: “Quem vê caras não vê corações.”

Example:

“Você diz que ela parece uma pessoa fantástica, mas eu digo quequem vê cara não vê coração.” (“You say she looks like a fantastic person, but I say that those who see a face do not see a heart.”)

2. “Quem não arrisca não petisca.”

Literal meaning: “Those who do not risk, do not have a snack.”

Meaning: If you do not take a risk, you will not get the benefits.

Looking for a new job, but feel too inexperienced to try applying? Not quite sure whether you should switch your major midway through the term for something more pleasant? Dreaming of competing in a talent show, contest, or competition, but worry you might make a fool out of yourself?

Portuguese people have a proverb for these events! Normally used as guidance to somebody who is in doubt about whether they should perform a dangerous move, such as swapping careers, moving abroad, or even just dating somebody new, “Quem não Arrisca não Petisca” means you should surely make that transit. Certainly, you will never get a sim (yes) if you do not indeed try, correct?

Example:

“Você deveria pedir um aumento de salário! Quem não arrisca não petisca!” (“You should ask for a raise! Those who don’t risk it, don’t have a snack!”)

3. “Aqui se faz, aqui se paga.”

Literal meaning: “Here it is done, here it is paid.”

Meaning: Bad actions lead to bad karma.

In need of some retaliation? Then this phrase would be the best for you. Also known in Portugal as “Cá Se Fazem, cá Se Pagham” (“here they are done, here they are paid”), this definition is normally utilized when we come to know that somebody who hurt us or hurt somebody we know had a blow in life or got what they justified. If you catch this expression shortly after the person saying it has been hurt, it is apparently a guarantee of revenge.

Example:

“Eu bem disse que um dia ela iria sofrer as consequências pelo que fez. Aqui se faz, aqui se paga!” (“I did say that one day she would suffer the consequences for what she had done. Here it is done, here it is paid!”)

4. “Cada macaco no seu galho.”

Literal meaning: “Each monkey to its own branch.”

Meaning: Each person should be liable for a special task, function, or topic, and not meddle with other people’s work or life when they are not asked to.

If you are wary of those nosy neighbors, sick of your co-workers giving you a free consultation, or fed up with your sibling declaring it is your turn to do the dishes when it clearly is not, use this expression. Ordinarily used when lines seem unclear, it is time to say it out loud: “Cada macaco no seu galho!” You might hear this phrase more frequently about business and work, but it can also seldom be used in relationships when one sees limits are needing and the circumstances seem to be all over the place. When one person is ruining and meddling with another person’s vocation, it is time to tell the monkeys where they belong!

Example:

“Não quero que controlem o meu trabalho. Eu sou do departamento de marketing, vocês são do departamento de contabilidade. Cada macaco no seu galho!” (“I don’t want people controlling my work. I am from the marketing department, you are from the accounting department. Each monkey to its own branch!”)

5. “Mais vale um pássaro na mão do que dois voando.”

Literal meaning: “It is worth more to have one bird in the hand than two flyings.”

Meaning: It is better to successfully retain one good thing than to lose two or more options due to being selfish.

There are moments when we have to make certain choices and sometimes more than often we are presented with things that might seem good, there comes along another thing that might seem even better than before. This phrase is usually sued when one is tempted to lose an opportunity to get bigger benefits that might not be certain later on. It is supposed toward people that they are being too greedy or stingy. For example, when someone tries to be unfaithful in a relation risking the other person’s love and trust.

Anybody who uses this definition apparently favors security to risk, and will usually tell you it is more beneficial to choose one thing and stick with it, rather than risk losing both. Be cautious! This phrase also subsists in Portugal, but you will usually hear it as “Mais vale um pássaro a mão do que dois a voar,” since the present continuous is extremely diverse in Brazilian and European Portuguese.

Example:

“Não pode mais esperar para aceitar essa oportunidade só porque está esperando a outra. Mais vale um pássaro na mão do que dois voando!”(“You cannot take any longer to accept this opportunity, just because you are waiting for the other one. It is better to have one bird in your hand than two flying!”)

6. “Quem ri por último ri melhor.”

Literal meaning: “He who laughs last laughs best.”

Meaning: Watch out for the consequences of your bad actions.

Some characters just seem to get on our nerves when they behave in self-centered ways and hurt others in their negligence. Some might even do it with intentions! When you use this composition, you mean these personalities should be cautious because the one who gets retaliation at the last minute will be in the ablest position… and we all know by now that “Aqui se faz, Aqui se pagan!” Make certain to use this phrase only when speaking to very dear friends about a third person to represent anger, and perpetually be cautious when using this right to someone’s face—it is usually translated as hopeful revenge!

Example:

“Ele pensa mesmo que pode fazer isso e não sofrer nenhuma consequência? Não se esqueça que quem ri por último ri melhor!” (“He really thinks that he can do that and not suffer any consequence? Do not forget that the one who laughs last, laughs best!”)

7. “Cão que ladra não morde.”

Literal meaning: “Dog that barks do not bite.”

Meaning: Normally, the people who are the loudest, most obnoxious, bullying, or proud are the ones who do not have the guts to take action.

If you have ever felt threatened by your boss, your domineering neighbor, a ruling friend, or just an obnoxious person on the street, know that a dog that barks normally does not bite! At least, that’s what Portuguese natives seldom say.

This explanation could be used either to calm somebody down after they have been braved by an offensive or obnoxious person or immediately as a way of ridiculing somebody who is acting domineering and aggressive.

Example:

“Não tenha medo dele. Ele sempre fala desse jeito, mas não faz nada. Cão que ladra não morde.” (“Do not be afraid of him. He always speaks that way, but he doesn’t do anything. The dog that barks does not bite.”

8. “É melhor prevenir do que remediar.”

Literal meaning: “It is better to prevent than to mend.”

Meaning: It is always better to avoid a problem by being careful than having to solve it afterward.

Recognize Quem não arrisca, não petisca?” Well, what if you do not consider taking risks as a positive thing?

Possibly you are the kind of person who favors security and happiness over taking needless hazards. In that situation, we have an explanation for them, too: “É melhor prevenir do que remediar!” This is usually utilized as information to somebody who is practicing a risk that could be bypassed, or insolently used by oneself after doing something smart that could circumvent future predicaments.

A modification may include “Antes prevenir do que remediar,” literally “Before to prevent than to mend.”

Example:

“Decidi procurar seguro. É melhor prevenir do que remediar!” (“I decided to seek insurance. It is better to prevent than to mend!”)

9. “A mentira tem pernas curtas.”

Literal meaning: “The lie has short legs.”

Meaning: Lies do not go far—they are easily discovered and exposed.

Is a family member or friend admitting they have told deceit and do not need to be found? Have you come to perceive that a colleague at work is deceiving to everybody? Then forthwith is the chance to say “A Mentira tem pernas curtas.” After all, the fact is often revealed sooner or later, so we might as well just withdraw lies. This composition is normally used either to tell somebody not to lie after they have announced that plan to us, or shortly after revealing a lie.

Example:

“Eu sabia que estava escondendo alguma coisa! Você esqueceu? A mentira tem pernas curtas!” (“I knew you were hiding something! Did you forget? The lie has short legs!”)

10. “Para bom entendedor, meia palavra basta.”

Literal meaning: “To a good ‘understander,’ half a word is enough.”
