Rey Mysterio’s 37 Tattoos & Their Meanings

Óscar Gutiérrez is popularly known by his ring name, Rey Mysterio. Rey is a Mexican-American professional wrestler signed into signed to WWE. Rey is very close to his uncle cum trainer Rey Misterio Sr. On his continuous motivation, Rey made his debut at the age of 14 years in Mexico on April 30, 1989. Rey is known to be very professional, but this has never stopped him from getting his body tattooed with his favorite designs. 1. ‘619’ Tattoo

Tattoo: On Rey’s left forearm we can see the vertically inked numbers as, ‘619’.

Meaning: Rey was born in  Chula Vista, California, United States. This number represents his area code. Some people also believe that this could also represent his finishing move known as Tiger Feint Kick used by Rey professionally inside the ring. Once in an interview Rey himself said that 619 represents himself, referring to his signature finishing move.

 “It represents what I do and where I come from; it’s a big significance for me,” he said. 

“I represent the 619.” 

2. ‘1976’ and ‘1995’ Tattoo

Tattoo: Rey’s inner arms are inked with two years. On his right inner arm, we can see the ink of the year 1995 whereas on the left arm we can see the tattoo of the year 1976.

Meaning: 1995 is the year when Rey took to a brief stint in Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) for the first time. Whereas the year 1976 represents the year when his uncle cum his trainer, Rey Misterio Sr debuted on 6 January 1976 on a show called “Day of the Kings”

Meaning: The name on his shoulder represents the name of his beloved wife, Angie Gutierrez.

Meaning: The tattoo is actually imagery of his own spine to show how each vertebra is strongly aligned. Rey said that every person gets to see downfall many a time in his life. Interestingly, many of the falls are also taken on their backs while performing professionally inside the ring. Thus, he wanted something a tattoo of his own spine to reflect that each vertebra has to be connected to be strong and it was something he found to be cool.

“I get credit for that from many people,” he said. “I haven’t seen it around or on pictures or in artwork; it comes from my years in this business.”

“eighty percent of the falls we take are on our backs,” he explained. “I thought it would be cool to design a tattoo on my spine showing how each vertebra should be aligned. Something I found cool is that when they filled it out on me, they said everything is pretty much as it should be. So it’s all pretty much in place.”

Tattoo: On his left bicep there is a batch with a green star and two green V’s tattooed inside it.

6. ‘Dove Bird’ Tattoo

Tattoo: Rey has got a flying dove bird tattooed inside his left upper inner arm. There are few stars tattooed around Dove’s head and face.

Meaning: Dove birds are used to symbolize peace and love. They are the most common symbols of victory.

Tattoo: Rey once claimed that he would get no tattoos on his chest. However, this major ink proved his claims false when he got a masterpiece in lieu of his dedication to The Aztec civilization. The tattoo shows us the Aztec calendar, which was a 365-day calendar and was used for the agricultural rituals and seasons in Mexico.

Meaning: Rey’s love for Mexico and even the Mexican football team got him into getting this tattoo inked. He got this tattoo to represent his culture and his childhood connection with it.

Rey claimed, “That was the worst pain I’ve felt when it came to tattoos,” he admitted. “But that is to show my pride, my culture… and it’s very important to me. That’s who I am.”

Tattoo:  On Rey’s left shoulder there lies a tattoo of his own mask. The tattoo also has the cross similar to the design of his own mask which also has a cross on its top head.

Meaning: Rey used to wear his mask always until the time he was unmasked in 1999 after he lost a tag-team match against Kevin Nash and Scott Hall. The cross in the mask tells us about his religious beliefs pointing us towards Christianity.

“I was at an autograph signing,” Mysterio explained with a smile. “A little girl gave me a collage that she made of me with a prayer on it. She said it was a prayer that she says for me every night.”

I wanted a fresh tattoo but couldn’t decide what to get. I read that little girl’s prayer every day and suddenly it hit me. That prayer is definitely the tattoo I want.”

Tattoo: In his post Rey revealed all of his hand tattoos together. There are symbols inked on his left hand’s fingers followed by kanji symbols on his right hand’s fingers. Not only this, his right and left hand’s top is inked with angel wings in shape of feathers.
