Jonathan Dwight Jones a.k.a Jon Jones or better known as Jon “Bones” Jones is an American professional mixed martial artist (MMA), signed with the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship). He is one of the best fighters in the world and has been a two-time winner and is also the current title holder of the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. After his controversies and the suspension, in 2017 he lifted the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship trophy again by defeating Alexander Gustafsson and defended his title well in the next two title fights. Jones only has two tattoos on his body. Let us take a look at what they are and the meanings behind them.
1. ‘Bible Verse’ Tattoo
Tattoo: The right side of his chest contains the words, “Philippians 4:13” tattooed on it.
Meaning: Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” This shows his strong religious beliefs and love for Jesus Christ. Moreover, he got this tattoo in memory of his sister, Carmen Jones, who passed away due to brain cancer. This scripture was his sister’s favorite. This tattoo was inked by the tattoo artist, Talina.
2. ‘Chinese Symbol’ Tattoo
Tattoo: The left side of Bones’ body contains two Japanese Kanji symbols.
Meaning: Inked on his left rib cage are two symbols: 㝊, which signifies “to guide”, and 術, which means art or skill, and represents the “su” in jiu jitsu. Although these characters don’t convey any particular meaning when combined, their pronunciation resembles the term “Gaidojutsu,” which is a martial art developed by Greg Jackson and practiced by Jones.
I’m Jon’s tattoo artist and I did his Philippians 4:13 tattoo. That tattoo was for his sister that passed away, it was her favorite scripture. 🤘🏼
